About Us

The Family Rexall Drug story began in 1963 when Milt Lueneburg purchased Popp Rexall Drug from Harold Popp and moved his family to Hutchinson. The store was a traditional drugstore for the times selling prescription drugs and other goods such as tobacco, cosmetics, cameras, cards, and gifts among other things. It was located in the Jorgenson Hotel building on the corner of Main Street and Washington Avenue.

In the summer of 1968, the store was expanded into the restaurant facilities being vacated by the hotel and allowed a much greater overall selection of cards and gifts. Shortly thereafter, the store was renamed Family Rexall Drug. In the early seventies an office supply department was added.

In 1982, Milt’s oldest son Brad graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy and joined the operation. At that same time, Milt purchased Carlson Pharmacy and Carlson Pharmacy South from Chuck Carlson. The downtown Carlson Pharmacy, across from the old medical center building, was closed and merged with the Family Rexall Drug. Carlson Pharmacy South next to the new Hutchinson Medical Center location on the west end of the hospital building was kept open as a satellite of Family Rexall Drug and eventually renamed to Family Pharmacy South.

A home healthcare and diabetic supply department was added to the downtown location in the eighties as cards and gifts were scaled back and other non-health items were phased out.

In 1991 Milt decided it was time to slow down and sold the stores to Brad. That same year, Family Pharmacy South moved along with Hutchinson Medical Center to its current location the east end of the hospital.

In 1999, Family Rexall Drug moved into the space vacated by the former Allen Office Supply on Hassan Street where it is today. The location afforded the convenience of up to the door parking while still remaining in the core of downtown Hutchinson.

Today, the cards and office supplies are gone along with some of the other original merchandise in order to better concentrate on pharmacy and other healthcare related products. As always, we are a company dedicated to continuing the caring, quality service that area residents have always received.
